sheath care
Our sheaths are manufactured from only the finest American split grained cowhide leather that is vegetable tanned and oiled. As an organic material, it is not covered in the knife warranty but it will last a lifetime with proper care. Proper care includes keeping the sheath clean with saddle soap and then reconditioning the sheath with Renaissance Wax, Mink Oil, Snow Seal or other leather care products. We recommend an initial treatment of a hot solution mixture of 80% beeswax to 20% saddle oil while the sheath is still new. After dipping the sheath in this hot solution, wipe off the excess both inside and outside and let dry before replacing the knife. This is an excellent method to help waterproof the leather.
Be careful in oiling the leather sheath without a wax in the solution as oil will soften the leather to a point that it can lose its molded shape. Do not dry a wet sheath over high heat, it will become brittle and crack. Allow the sheath to dry slowly in a warm, dry room. Always remove your knives from wet sheaths while drying.
Insert knife into sheath
Some sheaths require specific ways of inserting the knives. See the following:
How To Properly Insert Your Knife Without Damaging The Sheath
Hold the sheath in your left hand and the knife in your right hand with the logo facing up. Be sure that the sharpened blade edge of the knife is pointed away from you. Insert the knife into the sheath. If you are careful to always insert you knife in this manner you will prevent unnecessary damage to your equipment and yourself.
**Please note – ALL our sheaths are Right Handed**
COHO & STEELHEADER
Hold the knife in your right hand with the blade edge pointed away from your body. Hold the sheath in your left hand with the curved side pointed away from your body. Begin inserting the point of the blade into the Kydex liner at an angle as shown in the drawing above. As you insert follow the curve of the knife – straightening until the knife is completely inserted.
